Vier man uit het zuiden – in dit geval het zuiden van Nederland – vormen tezamen Moonshine Brigade. Maar ze zouden in plaats van uit Den Bosch ook best uit het zuiden van de States kunnen komen. Ik denk vooral uit de zuidelijke Appalachians. En opgegroeid op een dieet van zelfgestookte whiskey, 16 Horsepower en Bob Wayne. Dat heeft littekens achterlaten, in dit geval The Misery Stains (Black Kat Records), zoals hun debuutplaat heet. Of misschien komen ze wel uit Pocomoke City in Maryland, zoals ze zingen in Strangers (niet echt dus).

12 nummers, allen van eigen hand, staan er op de plaat. Gothic country folk zou een goede omschrijving zijn, met nummers waarin de banjo, mandoline en gitaar het geluid bepalen, ondersteund door een ritmesectie (drums en staande bas). De band heeft in Paul Hendriks en Willem Zenhorst bovendien twee zangers met rauwe stem die de nummers – heel passend – soms maniakaal laten klinken.

50 minuten is misschien een beetje veel om in een keer te behappen, maar dat we hier te maken hebben met een mooie nieuwe loot aan de Nederlandse roots-tak wordt wel duidelijk. Het album is opgenomen en gemixt door Frans Haarmeijer (van de eveneens Brabantse americanaband Sleepwater).

Four man from the South - in this case the South of the Netherlands - form the band Moonshine Brigade. They might have well have originated from the Southern States instead of Den Bosch. It's reminiscent of Appalachian music. Born and raised on a diet of home made moonshine, 16 Horsepower and Bob Wayne. That leaves scars, misery stains in this case  (Black Kat Records) the title of their debut album. Or maybe they hail from Pocomoke City, like they sing the song Strangers? (not really)

12 original songs are on the album. Gothic country folk would be a good description, with songs where banjo, mandolin and guitar determine the sound, supported by the rhythm section (drums and double bass). The band has two vocalists, Paul Hendriks and Willem Zenhorst, with raw  sometimes appropriate manic voices.

50 minutes might be a bit to much to stomach, but it's clear that there's a bright new branch in the Dutch roots scene. The album was recorded and mixed by Frans Haarmeijer (from the americana band Sleepwater).

Rauw en ongekunsteld. Dat is de muziek van Moonshine Brigade, een kwartet wildemannen uit Den Bosch.
Met een instrumentarium dat bestaat uit gitaar, mandoline, banjo, bas en drums betreden de heren het nog steeds niet helemaal ontgonnen land van illustere geestverwanten als 16 Horsepower, Amigo The Devil en Chance McCoy en zijn Old Crow Medicine Show. 
De Bosschenaren vertellen in hun ruige liedjes de meest onwaarschijnlijke en naargeestige verhalen. Zo komt er een vos met negen staarten voorbij en maken we kennis met goudzoekers en iemand die op Death Row wacht op zijn einde.
Verwacht geen muzikale hoogstandjes, maar dat is ook niet gepast in dit genre. Deze liedjes moeten rauw en ongepolijst zijn om goed over te komen. En dat zit bij de mannen van Moonshine Brigade wel snor.
In de eerste plaats omdat ze de kunst verstaan om zulke goede liedjes te schrijven  dat ze zich daadwerkelijk onderscheiden van hun in dezelfde vijver vissende Amerikaanse vakgenoten.

Raw and unaffected. That is the music of Moonshine Brigade, a quartet of wild men from the city of Den Bosch.
With an instrumentation consisting of guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass and drums, the gentlemen enter the still not entirely unexplored land of illustrious kindred spirits such as 16 Horsepower, Amigo The Devil and Chance McCoy and his Old Crow Medicine Show.
In their rough songs, the band from Den Bosch tells the most improbable and grim stories. For example, a fox with nine tails passes by and we get to know gold diggers and someone who is waiting for his end on Death Row.
Don't expect musical highlights, but that is not appropriate in this genre. These songs have to be raw and unpolished to come across well. And that is fine with the men of Moonshine Brigade.
First of all because they understand the art of writing such good songs that they really distinguish themselves from their American colleagues who fish in the same pond.
